Story

San Agustin Loxicha is a lush, densely forested community in the Sierra Sur region of Oaxaca known for its steep mountain slopes that face outwards to the Pacific Ocean. Here coffee grows under a thick canopy of native shade trees.

Loxicha's indigenous Zapotec traditions and languages are alive and well. Farmers here practice what they call Tequio, a form of communal work-sharing that facilitates a productive harvest.
Many of the farmers in this area have younger coffee trees that were planted in the last 5 years and continue the tradition of maintaining almost 100% Pluma variety, a local mutation of Typica that has grown here for over 80 years. It thrives in the region’s unique conditions, soil, and climate, producing spectacular cup quality.

Encouragingly, many of the farmers are also under 30 years old. Despite some young people migrating to the capital in search of opportunities, many remain committed to coffee farming, ensuring the tradition continues.
