Moka pot brew guide

The moka pot makes a strong, concentrated, and aromatic cup of coffee, reminiscent of espresso but with a slightly more delicate texture. It's a simple and comforting morning ritual.

This brew guide is adapted from James Hoffman's method.

You will need:

Moka pot brew guide

Parameters:

  • percent Ratio: ~10:1 (30 g coffee → 300 g water)
  • grain Grind size: Fine, but slightly coarser than espresso
  • device_thermostat Water temperature: 96 °C
  • schedule Total time: 5–10 minutes

Steps:

  • Fill the reservoir with hot water up to just below the safety valve.

  • Grind your coffee, then fill the basket. Tap the basket gently to settle the grounds. Optionally, use a distribution tool to level the dose.

  • Place the basket into the base and carefully screw on the top of the moka pot. Use a towel to avoid touching the hot base.

  • Set the moka pot over low to medium heat with the lid open. When coffee begins to flow from the spout, reduce the heat to low.

  • Continue brewing until the flow becomes lighter and starts to sputter. Remove from heat and transfer the coffee to a serving vessel or cup.

  • Optionally, dilute with hot water or add steamed milk to taste.
