Story

Semilla works in a cluster of small villages along the ridgeline of the Montecillos mountains, spanning the La Paz and Comayagua regions of Honduras. The small-scale farmers in these communities have relied on coffee as their main livelihood for years or even generations. Historically, their main sales channel has been either with intermediaries who drive their dump trucks into their communities to buy cherries or, even worse, they have to undertake the day-long trip of packing their cherries down to the city by mule, hoping to find a buyer who will offer them a decent price.

While this system of buying was effective for producers many decades ago, when production and input costs were much lower, it has been largely exploitative for the past 15 years. This type of sales channel has prevented producers from earning enough to reinvest in their farms and has kept them distanced from any meaningful connection with international buyers.

Semilla's goal is to pay prices that go beyond sustainability and are genuinely profitable, so that growers see quality-focused coffee farming as a real path forward. All pricing decisions are made collaboratively with growers, aiming for shared agreement rather than dictating terms. Prices are also kept consistent across a community, since the labor and risk of processing a microlot doesn't really differ based on a small difference in cup score.
